history

The first documentary mention as East Grove took place in the year 785 in a deed of donation from the Abbey of Fulda. In 987 Ostheim was given its current name. Since the 13th century the abbey had Ebersmunster here a possession and the Etival Abbey a possession in 1463. Until 1535, the year in which the Reformation was introduced, the village belonged to the Diocese of Basel. In the course of its history, the inhabitants have benefited from the fencing that flows through the center of the village, which has resulted in a large fish catch. During the Battle for Colmar, in which the fencing crossing was fiercely defended by the Germans, the place suffered from bombing from December 1944 to January 1945 so much that it had to be described as destroyed. The residents fled into the area. The complete reconstruction of the place with new streets and new church locations was finished in 1960.

Protestant Church

A first church was built in Ostheim in the 13th century, which became Protestant in 1535. It was a simultaneous church from 1687 to 1854. At that time it was dilapidated and too narrow and was being demolished. Two new churches were built in their place.

  • 1 Catholic Church - The St. Nicolas Catholic Church was consecrated in 1960. It was built in a strictly modern style. The interior was created by the French artist and glass painter Tristan Ruhlmann, for which we should particularly mention:
- the church windows
- the statue of the Notre-Dame of Ostheim made of lightly stained linden wood
- the 4 x 7 m painting on jute cloth in the background of the choir, which shows the appearance of the risen Christ to his apostles on Easter eve.
- the mosaic on the balustrade of the organ gallery, it shows scenes from the life of St. Nicholas
- the organ from 1963, a work by the organ builder Roethinger from Strasbourg
  • 2 Église protestante - The Protestant church was built on the banks of the Fecht in 1960 and was consecrated in the same year. Special mention should be made here
- the facade on the south side of the nave with 14 columns attached to the wall, behind which several church windows in vivid colors "peeked out"
- In the anteroom are the small clock hand and the entrance key of the previous church from 1854
- on the north gable is an iron crucifix with the crucified Christ and two children at his feet
- the separate bell tower with a square floor plan
- 11 narrow, high windows each on both long sides of the high nave
- the choir receives its light through a large church window on the side, which shows Jesus blessing the children
  • 3 Le mur des cigognes - The stork wall, a relic of two medieval houses that remained after World War II. Since March 1945 the storks have been coming back and repossessing their nest, which is on the rest of a firewall. This firewall is in connection with the stork's nest, where young birds are repeatedly born to be Symbol de la vie ("Symbol of life"), which prompted the community to erect a memorial for the dead here.
Two memorial plaques commemorate the last days of the World War: one is dedicated to the 36th Division of the US Army, which liberated the town's left bank on December 5, 1944, and the second honors the 3rd Division, which took over on 23 December 1944. January 1945 liberated the whole place. The flag of the 3rd Division can be seen in the town hall together with a photo of the commanding general John W. O'Daniel, after whom a street in the town is named.
  • 4 29 route de Colmar - At 29 route de Colmar, in the pre-war style, you can see the level of the street before the town was rebuilt after the war.
  • 5 rue du moulin - After the Second World War, a new mill was built on the site of a mill from the end of the 16th century, but it ceased operations in 1970. In 2001 the property was revitalized for apartments.
  • 6 Mairie - The town hall from 1950 stands on the site of a previous building from 1836, which, like the rest of the town, was completely destroyed towards the end of World War II. Today's town hall was inaugurated on June 18, 1951, on the same day as the nearby new Fecht Bridge. The town hall houses a bell from 1662 in its hall (when Ostheim still belonged to the Duchy of Württemberg), which served as a storm bell in the turret of the former town hall. A Colonel von Glaubitz, Württemberger, who was currently (around 1915) at Schoppenwihr Castle (at that time a rest home for German officers, see below) is said to have seen the bells stored there before being transported to German cannon foundries on his daily ride through Ribeauvillé and the have discovered the bell described above with the Württemberg coat of arms. Thereupon he gave the order to the mayor of Ostheim to immediately confiscate the bell and bring it to the town hall. This is how the bell escaped the fate of its "sisters" who were cast into cannons.
  • 7 Schoppenwihr - Schoppenwihr is a former manor, about 2 km south of Ostheim. The domain has been mentioned since 1424 and was the property of various noble houses. Towards the end of the 17th century, the estate came through marriage to the von Berckheim family, one of the oldest noble houses in Alsace. In the middle of the 18th century, the four sisters from Berckheim and their friend from Colmar, the poet Gottlieb Konrad Pfeffel, founded a "Center of Spirit and French Thought" (Center de l'esprit et de la pensée française).
Most of the park was laid out as a forest in 1770. Between 1869 and 1886, following the example of English gardens, it was redesigned with the planting of rare trees from all over the world and provided with ponds and islands. Around 1930 the park was restored to its present state by landscape architect Achille Duchêne.
In 1770 the "Schoppenwihr Castle" was just a modest, water-surrounded farmhouse in the style of that time, of which only the small clock tower on the roof of today's courtyard has remained to this day. During the redevelopment of the park in the 1870s, the building was enlarged and converted into a splendid Renaissance palace in line with contemporary tastes. During World War I, the building was "taken over" by the Germans and converted into a "rest home for officers". In 1945 the building was damaged by bombs. A few months after the liberation, the mines left by the Germans ruined the building, which was finally demolished in 1958.
Today the visitor is offered a beautiful park with ponds, bridges and a considerable population of trees. It has a size of about 40 hectares and is classified as Jardin remarquable ("Notable Garden"). Geö. from April 1st to November 1st from 2pm to 6pm with free admission or on a guided tour that requires a fee and requires registration (Tel. 33 (0) 3 89 41 22 37).
