Geographical notes
Bagolino is placed inside the Caffaro valley, a tributary valley of the Sand valley.
Background
Towards the beginning of the seventh century, Bagolino became part of the Lombard kingdom and was aggregated to the Duchy of Trento, together with the whole area that will later be called the Giudicarie. This land was governed, starting from the 11th century, by the bishopric of Trento, belonging to the Holy Roman Empire. In the communal age, during the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, Bagolino took care above all to defend its autonomy, alternately siding with the municipality of Brescia (Guelph) and the Episcopal principality of Trento (Ghibelline). In the fourteenth century it was subjected to the dominion of the lords of Lodron, vassals of the prince-bishop of Trento, who claimed ancient feudal rights over the town. Thus began a dispute destined to continue over the centuries. In 1440 Bagolino passed under the Republic of Venice remaining there, albeit through alternating events, until 1797. With the Serenissima, the municipality of Bagolino established solid ties of loyalty, obtaining considerable administrative autonomy in exchange. In 1473 it obtained its own statutes, which regulated in democratic terms the participation of the Bagosse families in the government of public affairs and guaranteed the functioning of numerous institutions of a social and solidarity nature. The relative distance from Venice and the religious belonging to the diocese of Trento characterized Bagolino as a border community, equipped, among other things, with its own militia. Autonomy was maintained despite several attempts by the Lodron counts to recover feudal dominion over the town. After the defeat of the Republic of Venice against the Napoleonic troops in 1797, Bagolino also became part of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom under the domination of the Austrian Empire, was involved in the events of the Italian Risorgimento and passed in 1861 to the Kingdom of Italy . In 1866, he was involved, together with the neighboring countries, in the Garibaldi campaign against Austria and in the military events that took place around the Rocca d'Anfo with the well-known battles of Ponte Caffaro and Monte Suello.

What see
- 1 Church of San Giorgio. Built between 1624 and 1632 by the Brescian architect Giovanni Battista Lantana. The exterior has a gabled façade, lightened, at the top by a mullioned window and an elegant pronaos with seven arches. The interior, with a single nave with large niches with altars on the side walls, is richly decorated in Baroque forms. The frescoes on the walls are by Tommaso Sandrini, Camillo Rama, Ottavio Viviani and Palma il Giovane. The main altarpiece, which depicts the Trinity with Saint George slaying the dragon is the work of Andrea Celesti.
- 2 Church of San Rocco. It was erected after the plague of 1478, to thank the saint for the cessation of the scourge. Inside, the cycle of frescoes created by the Camunian painter Giovanni Pietro da Cemmo, an artist who marks the transition from Gothic to Renaissance painting in the Brescia valleys is of great interest.
Events and parties
- 3 Bagolino Carnival (Ancient carnival dating back to the 16th century), ☎ 39 0365 99904, @[email protected]. Free admission. Parade of the "ballarini", with local dances and music, in the typical costumes through the streets of the town, on Sunday, Monday and Shrove Tuesday. The tradition of the Balarì, who perform exclusively on Monday and Tuesday of Carnival, represents the most spectacular aspect of the Bagosso Carnival; it has attracted the attention of ethnographic studies for the originality of the music and for the elegant complexity of the dances that are performed in the streets and squares of the town. The violin is the instrument that dictates the conducting melody of the various pieces that make up the wide musical repertoire that accompanies the dances. The costumes of the dancers are very characteristic, starting with the felt hat entirely covered with a long, expertly folded red ribbon, decorated with embroidery, jewels and multicolored ribbons that form a large bow. Gold jewels (chains, brooches, earrings, rings etc ...) belonging to the family or borrowed are carefully sewn onto the red ribbon. For this reason, the "balarì" do not hiss outdoors in case of rain. The wet thread, stressed by the jumps and movements of the dancers, would risk giving way, with serious risk of losing the gold lent. The face is hidden by an expressionless ivory mask, once made of canvas and coated inside with wax. The costume also forms a wide silk band, placed over the shoulder on the left shoulder, which bears sumptuous embroideries of flowers, trimmings or crochet lace inserts. The costume is completed by white gloves, stockings (also white, handmade with 4 needles, with all different motifs of openwork, hazelnuts, braids and stops at the calf by a trimmings woven to the loom on site) and black shoes .

Shopping
How to have fun
Where to eat
Typical product of the place is the Bagòss P.A.T. (P.rodotti Traditional Italian Agri-food), a circular-shaped cheese with extra hard, cooked and semi-fat paste, made with raw milk and with the addition of saffron. A very noble cheese, it is affectionately called by the locals the "grain of the poor". In fact, when it is well seasoned, it lends itself to grating: but Bagòss is above all an extraordinary table cheese. The producers of this cheese use a wood fire and large copper pots. In the summer they make cheese in the mountain pastures, in the winter a strict disciplinary provides for feeding the animals only with local haymaking.
