Southern Burma is a region of the Burma.

Geographical notes

The region of southern Burma corresponds to the plains crossed by the middle and lower course of the Irrawaddy River and its tributaries. It is the hottest area in the country.


Territories and tourist destinations

The territory is made up of the following regions:

  • Yangon region - There is located theformer capital, the largest city in Burma and the main entry point for Western tourists. Yangon it is of considerable interest for its pagodas and sumptuous colonial-era palaces.
  • Ayeyarwady region (or Irrawaddy) - To the east of Yangon, the Ayeyarwady region occupies the delta of the river of the same name (Irrawaddy) whose branches wind through dense forests interspersed with rice fields.
  • Bago region (Pegu) - North of Yangon the territory of Bago is crossed by the tourists who have decided to reach Bagan or Mandalay by land (by train or bus). However, those who stop there are rare. The capital Bago (ex Pegu) is about 80 km from Yangon; was founded in the 6th century AD. from the people of the Mon. Another place that could be considered is Pyay (or Prome), city on the Ayeyarwady River halfway between Yangon and Bagan, in the vicinity of which there is an archaeological site, the "Sri Kittara" or "Sri Ksetra", the ancient capital of the Pyu from the 2nd to the 9th century AD.
