Geographical notes

On the reliefs ofMolise Apennines in Central Molise, is 9 km from Campobasso, 4 from San Giovanni in Galdo.

Background

The first documents that mention Campodipietra date back to the first decades of the year 1000. The history of the town, however, does not record events of particular importance so it does not appear in the chronicles.

Even the origin of the name is not supported by testimonies; it is not known whether it derives from the male name Pietro or the female name Pietra; it is excluded that it derives from Stone understood as rock since the area where it stands does not present this characteristic at all.

What see

  • 1 Church of San Martino. It was built in 1770 by Nunzio Margiotta, near a large city gate that allowed its construction. The bell tower is a circular tower taken from a tower of the old castle. The facade is in late Baroque style with three portals and a central arched window. The internal choir is embellished with paintings on the apses.
  • 2 Church of San Bonaventura. It was built in the 16th century and then remodeled in the late Baroque period, with the consecration of Vincenzo Orsini cardinal in 1705.
The church is a convent complex with an arched facade and two bell towers. Legend has it that San Bernardino was to be the saint dedicated to a hail that shook the town. But the people called a lottery with the beans and Bonaventure was chosen.
