Background

The first traces of a settlement in the territory of San Giovanni in Galdo can be traced back to the 2nd century BC. when an Italic temple of which it is still possible to identify the remains was built on Colle Rimontato, near the current inhabited center. This temple, place of religious functions for the tribes of the Samnites Pentri, occupied an area of about eight hundred square meters and stood on a high stylobate. The remains testify that the temple had a square shape and was flanked by arcades divided by a podium with four Doric columns.

From the ancient splendor of the Italic settlements up to the Lombard period, there are no traces of particular significance in the settlement of San Giovanni in Galdo; only between the twentieth century and the year one thousand, with the occupation of the land in the higher parts of the territory, did the village begin to conform around the ancient church of San Giovanni Battista and the castle. During the eleventh century there is evidence of a definition of San Giovanni in Galdo as a "castrum" and therefore a fortified settlement.

In the following two centuries, until the appearance of the Swabians, there was a development of the settlement more directed towards economic and social aspects rather than physical ones. In the fourteenth century there is certainly a constructive fervor that leads to the construction, among other things, of the pulpit of the church of San Germano as evidence that the small center was also beginning to be affected by the presence of artisans who certainly enriched the buildings and buildings with precious works. the monuments of the village. The geological conditions of the site, certainly not very favorable for a settlement, and the frequency of calamitous events such as earthquakes, led to alterations that became very profound, when, in the mid-fifteenth century, a large landslide divided the country in two and swallowed part of it. and thus cutting out the "Morrutto" area.

During the eighteenth century another earthquake, extremely devastating, created the opportunity for a reconstruction. New walls were raised, but a large part of the inhabited center was recovered and rebuilt.

What see

  • 1 Church of San Giovanni Battista (San Germano). The church was probably built in the 14th century; it consists of a three-nave plan with stone masonry and a sober facade with a rose window. The bell tower is a tower with a rounded urban arch at the base.
Today the church is also entitled to "San Germano", and it is important on an artistic level for a stone pulpit, preserved in the left aisle. The pulpit is a sort of "box" that opens with a pointed arch, supported by columns with capitals decorated with anthropomorphic figures. Noteworthy are the bas-reliefs of Sant'Agostino and San Germano, as well as San Giovanni, depicted as a bearded man with long hair and a hairy cloak.
On the beam above the arch there is an anthropomorphic figure in the center, and on the sides an ox and an angel. At the base the columns are supported by lions.
  • 2 Italic temple. The temple (discovered in the 90s) was built around the third century BC. in an area called today Colle Rimontato. Built during the domination of the Samnites, it became an important center of the town after the social war in the 1st century BC. The area was inhabited until the 3rd century AD. when everything was abandoned, and the new medieval center of San Giovanni rebuilt further downstream.
It is a prostyle temple with a pronaos and a single row of columns, which surround the sacred cell. The floor is red with ivory white tiles. The raised podium has two entrances, and toothed decorations, with circular and fluted columns around. Probably the temple was accessed by a wooden staircase.
The plant is quadrangular, as is the sacred enclosure. Italic temple of San Giovanni in Galdo on Wikipedia Sanctuary of San Giovanni in Galdo (Q24940286) on Wikidata
