Background

Over the centuries there have been many interpretations given to the name Carovilli. The most well-founded is that provided by some local historians according to which the entry "Carovilli" simply repeats the name of the consul Spurius Carvilio Massimo, that is "Carvilius", of which the Latin historian Tito Livio speaks in book X of his work Ab Urbe Condita .

In the Lombard period Carovilli was a fief of the Borrellos, and it can be seen from a 1068 diploma with which a Borrello Count of Pietrabbondante made a donation of goods to the Monastery of San Pietro Apostolo. Towards the early years of the eighteenth century the town of Carovilli passed as a dowry to Anna Maria Marchesano, who had married Giuseppe d'Alessandro, Duke of Pescolanciano. She died in 1729 and was succeeded by her son Ettore d'Alessandro, in whose descendants the feud remained until the disappearance of feudalism. Carovilli has always been pertinent to the Contado del MoliseIn 1799 the town was included in the Department of Sangro and in the Canton of Agnone.
