Geographical notes

In the Apennines ofUpper Molise, the country is close to the border withAbruzzo; is 24 km from Agnone, 43 from Isernia, 18 from Roccaraso, 17 from Castel di Sangro, 16 from Borrello.

Background

Until 1790 its territory was still an integral part of theAbruzzo Hither according to the Papers of the Chamber Chalcography and of Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni, it seems that the town takes its name from the Castle of the Del Giudice family, who held the town as a fief. In medieval times, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the county was called Castellum Iudicis, while in Norman times it was held by a certain Guglielmo di AgnoneIn the following centuries the town did not undergo significant historical events except the birth of the leader Jacopo Caldora. From the twentieth century there were significant migratory flows towards the Americas and northern Europe.

What see

  • 1 Parish Church of San Nicola, Via Umberto I. The church dates back to the 15th-16th century. The baroque interior has 3 naves separated by squared pillars and bare of paintings except for the domes only. The pillars are surmounted by capitals with gilded stucco.
In the aedicule behind the altar there is a statue of San Nicola di Bari. The aedicule is flanked by two columns supporting a pseudo-canopy as protection for the statue (above there is a polychrome glass window, if the latter is opened, the rainwater that would enter could damage the statue).
The altar is in polychrome marble and gilding. The stained glass windows in the central nave depict the 3 theological virtues.
The bell tower was completely rebuilt in the 1950s.
On 7 October 1984 the church was hit by an earthquake. Subsequently the church was closed to the public 2 days later. The building was only reopened to the public 14 years later.
  • Church of the Immaculate Conception, at the central square. Ecb copyright.svgOriginally it was the seat of a coven with the name of the Blessed Sacrament. Destroyed during one of the 2 world wars, it was later rebuilt. The interior has 2 naves, one of which is occupied by the sacristy (located to the left of the main church used for religious functions). The interior is completely white and the attic is occupied by a parish hall..
  • 2 Sanctuary of the Madonna in Saletta. It is located in the middle of a pine and fir forest and is 3 kilometers from the town center. In front there is a lawn with picnic equipment. The sanctuary is in rural Romanesque style; in 1950 it underwent an almost "ab imis" reconstruction. The interior has a single nave.
In ancient times, a not very large ancient monastery was to be found in the same place.
The name Small room probably derives from an inscription of the sanctuary: "Salectu ubi ex antiquitus ficta fuit columna marmorea".
On the secondary altar of a chapel there is a canvas depicting the Madonna dating back to the 15th-16th century, represented with the likeness of a commoner matron sitting on a rock in the act of holding the Child Jesus in her hands. The author is anonymous, but someone identifies him with San Luca. An optical effect gives the illusion that the Madonna's gaze follows the viewer.
Legend has it that the Madonna and Child stopped on a rock near the Sanctuary and the cast of the Madonna's knees was imprinted on this rock.
  • Chapel of Sant'Antonio. Religious building of modest architectural interest. It has recently been restored. It stands on the edge of the village on the Ateleta side on the state road 588
