When to go

Summer is the best time to visit Cerchio and to discover the traditions and history of the country through its churches, theater and museum. Every year, on August 24, the delivery of the papal bull by Pope Boniface VIII to the church of San Bartolomeo is solemnly commemorated. The historical procession of the "Bulla Indulgentiarum" winds through the streets of the ancient village, with figures dressed in period clothes and flag-wavers.

Background

Procession of the Bulla Indulgentiarum

In ancient times the territory of Cerchio was made up of several villas, farmhouses and villages which over time have united to form the current urban center. The ancient church of San Bartolomeo is mentioned in the papal bull of 1302 by Pope Boniface VIII. In the late Middle Ages the town belonged to the Roman families Colonna and Piccolomini who ceded it in 1591 to the sister of Pope Sixtus V, Camilla Peretti. Later his lands belonged to the County of Celano and to the Barony of Pescina. In the contemporary age, the definitive drainage of Lake Fucinoad by the Roman banker Alessandro Raffaele Torlonia, prince of Civitella-Cesi, radically changed the economy of the town as well as that of the entire Marsica. The earthquake of January 13, 1915 destroyed the ancient country causing several hundred deaths. More than three hundred were the victims in the parish church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo alone, crowded at the moment of the earthquake. From the mid-nineteenth century on, Cerchio too, like most of the mountain centers of Abruzzo, suffered strong emigration flows.
