Chęciny is a historical place in Poland in the voivodeship Holy Cross. The place is in Heiligkreuzgebirge and is known for its castle ruins.

background

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1275. Shortly afterwards he received city rights. The royal castle was also built in the 13th century. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, the place came successively to the Habsburgs, the Duchy of Warsaw and finally to Congress Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire. After the First World War he became Polish again.

The castle was built in the 13th century. It belonged to clerical rulers at the latest in 1306. The treasure of the Archdiocese of Gniezno has been hidden here since 1318. Casimir III the great one expanded the castle further around 1350. The castle then served primarily the Polish queens as a residence and as a prison for particularly important prisoners. In 1607 the fortress was damaged during the Zebrzydowski uprising and in 1655 and 1708 it was plundered and pillaged by Swedish troops. The castle fell into disrepair from the 18th century. The ruins continued to suffer during the First and Second World Wars.

The stalactite cave Raj (in German: Paradise) was discovered in 1963. Thanks to the numerous karst features, it is considered to be the most beautiful cave in Poland. The cave is around 360 million years old and is visited by around 100,000 tourists every year.
