background
The province of Corrientes is actually not yet known as a travel destination, but this area also offers something for tourists. In particular, the swamps in the center of the area are still largely untouched nature, whose flora and fauna can compete with the better-known Pantanal in Brazil. The rivers Paraná and Uruguay attract with bathing beaches, where you can swim almost all year round.
language
In Corrientes, as in the neighboring provinces, one notices the influence of the Guaraní on the Spanish spoken there. But that doesn't mean there are any problems of understanding.
getting there
You have to drive to Corrientes from almost all of Argentina via the Entre Ríos province, as there is only one bridge over the Paraná River near the capital Corrientes itself. Numerous buses operate on the two main routes RN 12 and RN 14.
mobility
As the population density is generally quite high, there are good bus connections and a decent road network. An exception is the interesting area around the Iberá marshes, where there is now also a tarred driveway and bus connections.
Tourist Attractions
- Colonial buildings, in Corrientes.
- Floating islands, in the Esteros del Iberá National Park.
- Rock formations, in Empedrado.
activities
You can take long boat tours in the marshland. The starting point is the small village of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, in which an acceptable tourist infrastructure is slowly settling.
You can swim and do water sports on the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. It is not recommended in the marshland itself with its lakes.
kitchen
Despite the location with many rivers, very little fish is eaten, the "standard food" of Argentina with lots of meat dominates the menu.
nightlife
There is a rich nightlife in Corrientes, which is particularly lively during Carnival time. In the smaller towns you can find the Argentine "standard program" with a few mainstream discos on Fridays and Saturdays.
security
There are no special security risks in the region. In the marshland you should always wear sturdy shoes when hiking because of the poisonous snakes that live there.
climate
The climate is subtropical. The summers are very warm to hot (33 ° C average daytime temperature) and the winters are very mild (18-22 ° C average daytime temperature), whereby the nights are rarely too cold, unlike in western and central Argentina.
trips
The area is suitable as a stopover to the spectacular Iguazu Falls.
