background
In 889 the “Dulmenni” peasantry is mentioned for the first time in the register of the Werden monastery. In 1311 Dülmen was granted city rights, and the Lüdinghauser Tor was built as part of the city fortifications and is now the city's landmark. During the Second World War, 90% of the city center was destroyed, after which a new city center was built. Dülmen, which was based on the middle class, became a garrison town in 1963 and its population continued to grow steadily. In 1975 the surrounding villages and parishes were incorporated.
The districts of Rorup, Buldern, Hiddingsel, Hausdülmen and Merfeld belong to the city of Dülmen.
The city is very committed to bicycle-friendliness, has a large network of bicycle paths and is a member of the working group for bicycle-friendly cities, municipalities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia (AGFS).
