Three Peaks - Drei Zinnen

The three peaks from the north

The Three Peaks are a mountain group in the Sexten Dolomites in Italy. They are on the border between the provinces South-Tirol and Bellluno. The highest of the three peaks is 2999 meters high and just barely missed the 3000 mark. It is called high pinnacle and stands next to the western pinnacle (2973 m) and the small pinnacle (2857 m). The three peaks are known because of the steep north walls, some of which overhang by up to 40 m. However, this cannot be seen from the Auronzo Hut, only from the north.

getting there

The three peaks are best reached from the south. There is also a large parking lot at the Auronzo hut. To see the famous north face, you have to walk the rest of the way.

With public transport

There are frequent buses from Toblach to the Auronzo hut. You can get to Toblach by train Lienz in Austria or Franzensfeste at the Brenner route.

By car

By East Tyrol or about the burner and through that Val Pusteria to Dobbiaco, from there turn into the Höhlensteintal (SS 51), then onto the SP 49 and to the Auronzo hut. However, the last part is heavily congested and tolls depending on the season.

By plane

On foot

When hiking you have the most diverse travel options: From Sexten, Auronzo di Cadore, Misurina, the Höhlensteintal and Dobbiaco you can reach the circular route.

activities

hike

The tour around the Drei Zinnen on the Auronzo Hut - Langalm - Dreizinnen Hut - Auronzo Hut is popular, but this path is sometimes overcrowded. It is possible to switch to a few smaller paths that pass closer to the Drei Zinnen, but leave out the Langalm and Dreizinnenhütte. For other routes, see chapter Getting here on foot.

Rockclimbing

All three peaks can be climbed, although the normal routes are those from the south. The most difficult normal route is the one to the small pinnacle, the north walls are even more difficult, especially those of the western pinnacle with overhangs of up to 40 meters in the horizontal direction.

Winter sports

There is no winter sports area directly at the Drei Zinnen, but there are two drag lifts in Misurina and a larger ski area in Sexten. From Misurina to the Auronzo hut, you can go winter hiking or take a snowmobile ride, a toboggan run leads down.

Mountain huts

There are three huts around the Drei Zinnen, on the circular path:

  • The Auronzo hut at the parking lot
  • The Dreizinnenhütte
  • The Langalm

In all huts you can eat as well as spend the night.

accommodation

The huts mentioned in the mountain huts section can all be visited for overnight stays, but there are also overnight accommodations in the surrounding valley towns. The closest thing to this is Misurina. There is, for example, the old Grandhotel Misurina, one of the oldest hotels in the region.
