The Dreisam arises shortly before Freiburg near Kirchzarten through the confluence of the Rotbach and Wagensteigbach. It then flows through Freiburg, where it canalized into the Freiburg Bächle crosses the city and finally flows into the Elz. The catchment area of the source rivers is primarily of interest to tourists.
The Rotbach starts as Zartenbach at Hinterzarten. It then flows as Löffeltalbach ins Hell Valley. At the Höllsteig it unites with the one from the Ravenna gorge coming Ravenna brook. Now it flows as Höllenbach continue to Kirchzarten.
The Erlenbach arises at St. Märgen, as Holzschlagbach it flows into the valley. From the hamlet it is called Wagensteig Wagensteigbach and finally unites with the Höllenbach to the Dreisam.
Another tributary of the Dreisam is the Eschbach, which flows from St. Peter comes here and flows out at Stegen.
