Thornwood is a scattered settlement in the upper Durnholzertal im Sarntal. The place is the starting point for tours in the Sarntal Alps.

Durnholz is predominantly rural and consists of a total of 37 farms. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1237 as Durrenholz, the church has been documented since 1405.

By plane

The nearest airport is that of Bolzano (www.abd-airport.it), other airports are located in Verona, in innsbruck (approx. 2 hours by car) and in Munich (approx. 3-4 hours by car).

In the street

St. Nicholas Church

  • Romanesque church St. Nicholas with origins as far back as the 13th century, historical frescoes;
  • There is still a stock of partly ancient ones in the village Farmswhich have been preserved quite well in their historical structure with a bundwerk in the roof. E.g. the Meßnerhof (next to the parish inn at the church) is estimated to have been built around the 13th century.
  • Lake Durnholz
Idyllic and fish-rich alpine lake at an altitude of 1540 m, with a total area of ​​approx. 12 hectares, approx. 900 meters long, 350 meters wide and up to 13 meters deep. Bathing in the ice-cold water is only something for die-hard people, there is a hiking trail that can be walked around the lake in summer and winter.
The lake owes its creation to a landslide that dammed the Seebbach and Großalmbach from the adjoining valleys to form the lake.
The legend tells the story of the lake farmer, who had forbidden his servants to stop working in the meadow to pray the "Ave Maria" because a thunderstorm was threatening. The thunderstorm that followed turned the brooks into raging rivers and the meadow was turned into Lake Durnholz.
