Emsland - Eemsland

The region Emsland (German: Emsland) is a region (Kreis) in the German state Lower Saxony. The region is named after the river Ems and is one of the largest regions in Germany in area.

Salzbergen was once an important railway junction for the Netherlands. In the station of the steam train te Haaksbergen can still be seen that a rail connection from Almelo to Salzbergen was once maintained. Nowadays trains run on these rails from Amsterdam to Berlin. They have no stop in Salzbergen; only the RB trains from Bad Bentheim to now stop there Osnabruck and beyond, and the slow trains from Rheine to Meppen and Emden. Together with the Syntus train from Hengelo nasty Bad Bentheim do they offer a fast connection between Twente and the Emsland, albeit with a lot of switching.

At the southernmost tip of this region, the European walking route E11. This route runs from the Hague to the east, currently the border Poland/Lithuania. Locally, the route has Handelsweg, also called Töddenweg. The route comes from Schüttorff in Grafschaft Bentheim, runs just south of the village of Salzbergen and continues to the town of Rheine in the region Steinfurt.
