Erto and Casso it's a common scattered of the Friuli Venezia Giulia.

To know

The population, already sharply decreased due to emigration, decreased further after the Vajont tragedy, not so much for the dead (158, however many), but above all because the new houses for the Ertani and Cassanesi were built in other municipalities, often at a considerable distance from the places of origin. Among these, the Nuova Erto di Bridge in the Alps, the new neighborhoods of Longarone, Cimolais is Claut, the Roiatta village of San Quirino is Vajont, a town built from scratch in the aftermath of the event and which immediately welcomed 732 residents of the municipality.

It is part of the club dei Authentic villages of Italy.

Geographical notes

Erto e Casso, located in the Vajont Valley on the border with the province of Belluno, is the westernmost municipality in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The Vajont valley, where Erto and Casso are located, is however separated from the Valcellina by the Sant'Osvaldo Pass (827 m).

Background

The existence of Erto is documented by Roman remains and by a donation deed by Sesto al Reghena dating back to the eighth century, while the more recent origin of Casso is attested in the eleventh century. There are also significant linguistic differences between the two settlements: in Erto an intermediate dialect is spoken between Dolomitic Ladin and Friulian, while in Casso a Belluno Veneto dialect, similar to the archaic Venetian. Also from the ecclesiastical point of view the two towns are separate: Erto is part of the diocese of Concordia-Pordenone, while Casso is in the diocese of Belluno-Feltre.

Casso is not its own parish, in fact it is part of that of Santa Maria Immacolata in Longarone.

At the end of the fifties the community was deeply linked to the traditional agricultural economy, integrated with the small itinerant trade. At the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, SADE carried out the project to use the Vajont valley as an artificial basin. A double-curved dam of 265 meters in height was therefore raised in the Colombèr gorge.

On the night of 9 October 1963, from the nearby Monte Toc, located in front of the hamlets of Erto and Casso, a part of the mountain broke off and ended up in the underlying water basin bounded by the Vajont dam. The resulting waves completely destroyed the villages of Fraseign, Spesse, Pineda, Prada, Marzana and San Martino and part of the two capitals. This tragic episode, whose victims in Erto and Casso were 347, is known as Vajont disaster.

The town, due to its peculiar architecture, was declared a national monument in 1976 and, therefore, bound by Law 1089/39.

In recent years, an agreement with the National Mountain Institute has also led to the development of the "EcoMuseo Vajont: continuity of life" project, designed to support the development of the territory and enhance the historic center.
