Geographical notes
The Claut territory includes the Cellina valley from the Contron hamlet to its end at the foot of Mount Caserine Alte. There are also some collateral valleys; the main ones, all located on the orographic right, are the Week valley, the beginning of the Cimoliana valley, the beginning of the Feron valley and the Chialedina valley. They are crossed by the homonymous torrents (Week, Cimoliana, Feron, Chialedina) tributaries of the Cellina.
From an orographic point of view, the Cellina valley represents the meeting point between the Chiarescons-Cornaget-Resettum chain and the Cavallo-Visentin chain, or between the Belluno pre-Alps and the Carnic pre-Alps.
Background
Perhaps of Roman origins, Claut is mentioned for the first time in 924, when the Countess Imeltrude donated to the abbey of Sesto al Reghena the «villa quae vocatur Clautosius Rosarios Munizios».
For the rest, the news on the locality is extremely scarce, due to the marginal and isolated position in the Cellina valley, once inhospitable and difficult to navigate. The toponym itself seems to be a reflection of it, referring to the Latin Clauditum "closed place". It was only in the years of the Venetian Republic that the traditional mountain activities were joined by the trade in timber which was transported along the Cellina thanks to a system of stue, that is, small locks made of logs.
The construction of the Montereale-Molassa road, built at the beginning of the twentieth century to exploit the hydroelectric energy derived from the Cellina and extended in 1911-13 up to the Piave valley, obviated the secular isolation of the town but, on the other hand, favored the emigration to the plains and abroad. The phenomenon worsened after the Second World War, to stabilize shortly after with the opening of the first modest tourist activities which, however, had a short life due to the inadequacy of the structures.
This crisis, accentuated by the Vajont disaster and the Friuli earthquake, was followed by a period of recovery with the rearrangement of the communication routes and the rebirth of tourism, linked to sport and Natural park of the Friulian Dolomites.
It is evident that the small mountain town of Claut was from the very beginning a flourishing center of trade with the towns of Cadore and with Germany. It was perhaps a way of connection from the mythical Caelina, presumed city in the current area Maniago and perhaps Claut can mean Caelina Alta and maybe not. It is also thought of a derivation from "Claustrum", therefore a naturally walled city and perhaps a word of "Latin-Germanized". In the Middle Ages agriculture also flourished in the mountains, various types of minor arts as everywhere in Italy and in South Tyrol. Perhaps abandoned and / or forgotten for reasons also of "shock-wave" from earthquakes or other catastrophes or simple changes of trend in the original economic and social system.

- With the partial reopening of the line, from 10 December 2017 the station is again served by Regional trains in service between Sacile and Maniago. In addition to serving the city in which it is located, the station plays an important role as a hub for the surrounding valleys.
How to get around
What see
- 1 Parish Church of San Giorgio, Piazza S. Giorgio, 4, ☎ 39 0427 878078. It has very ancient origins but the current building is a reconstruction of the years 1823-28. Of the works preserved here we remember the pictorial decorations performed by Tiburzio Donadon in the early twentieth century and the valuable wooden altars probably made by local artisans.
- During its history it was a branch of the parish church of Cimolais, in turn gravitating around the abbey of Sesto al Reghena. For this reason it was included in the patriarchate of Aquileia (later archdiocese of Udine) until 1818, when it passed to the diocese of Concordia-Pordenone. Emancipated from the matrix in 1607, in 1955, following the renunciation of the patronage by the heads of the family, she was declared archpriest.
- 2 Casa Clautana Museum, Piazza S. Giorgio, 4. Composed of the museum exhibition at the visitor center of the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park and the Ciasa da Fum, it sees on the one hand the valuable reconstruction of the setting of a Clautan house accompanied by the path of the sedonera woman "fora pal mont", and on the other the opportunity to visit an original typical local house dating back to the seventeenth century.
- 3 Dinosaur Park (in Val Gere).
open in the summer months. Open air museum; it preserves dinosaur tracks imprinted on a large boulder near the "Malga Casavento" dairy in Val Gere, where it is possible to find the homonymous restaurant open in the summer months.
- 4 Landre Scur cave. Characteristic cave that has a cavern several tens of meters high at the entrance. At the end of this a small tunnel, often flooded by water, leads to the first real cavity. The name of this cave means "L'Antro Oscuro / Buio" in the local dialect; this name was given to it due to the darkness present at its entrance.
Events and parties
What to do
- Pradut area. In addition to hiking, various outdoor activities are possible, even in winter, thanks to the network of paths and forest roads that connect mountain huts to bivouacs and to the refuge of the same name.
- Canyoning. In the village of Claut there is also a stream which, eroding the rocks, has created a path called Ciafurle, through which canyoning can be practiced.
- Ski. In Claut there are facilities for cross-country skiing and for downhill. In 2009 the restructuring of the cross-country track in Despolei was completed, already equipped with an artificial snow system; subsequently the route was modified with the creation of two bumps which increased the height difference of the route and an efficient lighting system was set up.
- 1 Ice rink, via Despolei, 2, ☎ 39 333 290 2337. There is also a modern ice rink, named after Alceo Della Valentina, which was home to the 2003 Universiade for curling and the European curling championships in 2006, as well as hosting the home ice hockey matches of the USG Zoldo Valcellina.
- Bicycle. A new cycle path has recently been created, accessible to any type of bicycle, over 20 km long that winds through the Claut and Cimolais valleys, crossing sites of particular interest and natural beauty that include the Muntisele, the Pianpinedo Wildlife Park, the Pinewood of the old Prada and the centers of Claut and Cimolais.
- Municipal gym. It is an important reality for the opportunities it offers at a competitive sports level. Conceived to host competitions and preparation stages, even at a high level in the disciplines of basketball and volleyball, in a few years of life it has already hosted numerous stages of national and international youth basketball and volleyball tournaments.
