The airport was opened in 1952, at that time still under the name Jan Smuts International Airport. Since 2006 he bears the name of the anti-apartheid politician Oliver Reginald (O.R.) Tambo.

The airport is in the south of the city Kempton Park, it is about 20 km from Johannesburg and about 50 km from Pretoria away.
