The airport Tenerife south was officially opened on November 6, 1978 by the Spanish Queen Sofia and is named in her honor Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur Reina Sofía. It is located about 60 km southwest of the island's capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but only 15-25 km away from the tourist centers Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. This enabled the strong expansion of these tourist destinations, as a result of which the number of passengers rose from an initial 1 million per year to over 7 million. The airport is now being expanded.

There is currently one terminal, a second is planned. There is only one suitcase return area. It's quite a long way from some gates. You have to walk a long way to get there. But there are the usual treadmills that transport you there. It just takes time. If you have booked a package tour, you will be greeted as soon as you receive your suitcase. Here you can get the necessary information and there is a large parking lot for the buses that distribute the tourists to the hotels. It's very "relaxed", there are no problems.
Arrival and departure
Some charter companies fly to several airports from Europe Canary Islands at. So it happens that aircraft from Germany initially come on Gran Canaria land, exchange some of their passengers and then fly on to Tenerife. During these stopovers, all passengers have to leave the aircraft on some flights.
Check in
There are 87 in total Check-in counter. Usually, a plane can only be checked in about 2 hours before departure. Directly at check-in is the passage to the 22 gates.
Parking / mobility
There is a parking lot on the north side parallel to the terminal, which is free of charge for the first half an hour. The parking lot for car rental companies has its own driveway just a few meters away. There is a service for the disabled on Tel 902 404 704.
Car rental companies
There are 6 car rental companies at the airport, some of them have their counters just a few meters from the baggage carousel in the terminal. A driver's license must be presented to rent a vehicle.
security
Anyone who wants to go through the air security check into the waiting room will quickly find out that there is still no uniform standard in Europe. The tone is very rude, the staff can speak parts of all possible foreign languages, but unfortunately only the forms of command! But it is quite popular to follow these commands. One can certainly argue about the sense and nonsense of these controls, but please not with the staff present. They are also protected by the Guardia Civil and these gentlemen do not always know what a joke is.
shop
There are a total of 14 shops. It should be noted, however, that the entire archipelago of the Canary Islands has a special position within the EU and practically every shop in Tenerife offers duty-free goods. It is only worth shopping for special offers in the duty free shop.
kitchen
There are 6 restaurants within the terminal, mostly from fast food chains. But they have very steep prices. You have to pay an airport surcharge.
Practical advice
In the check-in hall there is a bank counter, a pharmacy and 3 ATMs. Smoking is prohibited in the entire Tenerife South Airport, and there are also no smoking areas.
