Freiburg, in Swiss is the capital of the canton bearing the same name. It is a bilingual city with a University that attracts students from all over Switzerland and abroad.

Understand

Interest

The medieval capital is unknown, and very often one passes next to this city which one can consider as "badly sold".

History

From its origin on the borders of two influences, Friborg was born in the second half of the XIIe century of the will of a Germanic prince, whose family is closely involved in the history of the kingdom of Burgundy.

For nearly two centuries, Freiburg was under the domination of the Habsburgs (1277-1452). Many vicissitudes, both military and political, will mark this period. But the city on the banks of the Sarine will also experience certain prosperity. The bourgeois community takes its destiny in hand: the city is growing, trades are organized into corporations, education and assistance are developing. As the construction of a new church dedicated to Saint Nicholas began (1283), the work of which would last for several centuries, Friborg adapts its political system to its extension. Thus, by the Lettre des Bannerets (1404), it gave itself a new constitution.

But from the middle of the XVe century, the political situation is deteriorating. Faithfuls of Savoy and supporters of the Austrians clashed regularly for several years. Faced with such confusion, the city placed itself under the suzerainty of Savoy (1452-1477) and renewed the important treaty of combourgeoisy passed in 1403 with Bern which, for its part, encountered difficulties with Burgundy. Indeed, Charles the Bold received as a pledge from Austria lands near Bernese Aargau (1469). Member of the League of Swiss cantons since 1353, Bern will involve Friborg in a war against the Bold and Savoy, its ally.

During XVe and XVIe centuries, Friborg will constitute a practically final territory by acquiring several seigneuries and villages, by participating in the conquest of the Pays de Vaud (1536) and, always in the company of Bern, in the dissolution and partition of the County of Gruyère (1554- 1555). In foreign policy, Friborg adopts a moderate attitude, influenced by France, its main ally. It was also in the city that the Perpetual Peace between France and the Swiss cantons was signed in 1516, following the Italian Wars, a peace marking the beginning of a Swiss policy of neutrality.

Thanks to the manufacture and trade of fake blades, leathers and especially sheets, Friborg enjoys great economic prosperity. Friborg merchants attend major fairs, particularly in Geneva and Zurzach, and also benefit from the advantages of the Gotthard axis, open from XIIIe century. But at the beginning of modern times, the conjunction of several factors - decline in the quality of production, wars, mercenarism, development of new trade routes, Protestant Reformation, etc. - causes the decline of its industry.

On an artistic level, the arts know XVIe and XVIIe centuries a brilliant development with among others the works of the sculptors H. Geiler and H. Gieng (Renaissance fountains), of the painter H. Fries, author of numerous altarpieces, without forgetting the creations of the workshop of the Reyff brothers who also helped to shape the image of “artistic Freiburg”. It was also the time of the Reformation, which Friborg resisted, even finding itself entirely surrounded by Protestant countries from 1536. Actively participating in the "rebirth of the Catholic spirit", the Jesuits began in 1580 to found the College. Saint-Michel, of which Pierre Canisius will be “the soul” for seventeen years. Soon after, other religious communities will join the Society of Jesus, adding to those already established in the city in XIIIe century. It was also at this time that the first books (1585) were printed in Friborg.
