Gangelt is a rural community in the district of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia at the Lower Rhine.

background

The place is on the border with the Netherlands in the far west of the Federal Republic on the edge of the northern edge of the Rodebach valley. The place name has Celtic origins. Gangelt was first mentioned in documents in 828 AD. At that time the place was a royal estate. Gangelt later belonged to the von Heinsberg family. In 1301 Gangelt is referred to as an oppidum (small town). In 1364 there was a castle, Burg Gangelt. By 1420 at the latest, there was a city fortification with a city wall completely surrounding the city and three gates. In 1472 the Duchy of Jülich became sovereign. At the end of the 18th century Gangelt lost the status of a town.

On July 1, 1969, the municipality of Gangelt was reorganized as part of the municipal reorganization. 11,761 inhabitants live in 19 localities in the municipality: Birgden, Breberen, Broichhoven, Brüxgen, Buscherheide, Gangelt, Harzelt, Hastenrath, Hohenbusch, Kievelberg, Kreuzrath, Langbroich, Mindergangelt, Nachbarheid, Niederbusch, Schierwaldenrath, Schümm, Stahe and Vinteln.
