Gehlberg has been part of the city of Suhl since 2019.

By train

Gehlberg has a train station on the railway line to Suhl or Oberhof, where regional trains stop about every hour. Regional express trains, on the other hand, pass through.

In the street

Gehlberg is basically via the autobahn A71 to reach. To get to Gehlberg you take Symbol: AS 17 Graefenroda, drives over B88 into Graefenroda, where one leads to the one to Gehlberg L 2149 got.   • Snow head 978 m - The second highest mountain in the Thuringian Forest is a very beautiful vantage point due to its treeless summit. Anyone staying in Gehlberg should definitely make a detour to the Schneekopf and not miss one of the most beautiful panoramic views over the Thuringian Forest. The mountain is a beautiful day hiking destination from Gehlberg. If you want, you can also drive to Schmücke. From here it's a leisurely stroll up the mountain.
In June 2008 the newly built lookout tower was opened on the mountain. The tower turns the mountain into a "one-thousand-meter". The viewing platform (without elevator) is located at 1001 m and 12.5 cm above the sea. Entry: 3 €. The tower keepers also sell picture postcards with their own postmark from the Schneekopf, snow-head balls, hiking maps, small souvenirs and a snow-head T-shirt. In 2010 the "Neue Gehlberger Hütte" (mountain hut and hiking hostel) was opened.

  • Wilde Gera valley bridge - The valley bridge of the Thuringian Forest autobahn with its wide concrete arch is an imposing and at the same time beautiful building. From Gehlberg, the bridge is a nice destination for a walk.
  • Great Beerberg At 982.9 m, the highest mountain in the Thuringian Forest. The wooded peak is a nature reserve and not accessible. But there is one on the Rennsteig Lookout point looking after Suhl.

There are attractive hiking opportunities around Gehlberg. Hiking destinations are, for example Snow head with a great view, Oberhof with Rennsteig garden, Decorate and the Finsterberg with viewing platform.

Winter sports

  • Alpine skiing - In Gehlberg there is a ski lift "Am Ritter" at an altitude of about 700 m. The longest run is 750 m long with a 90 m difference in altitude.
