Background

The ancient origin of the town is attested by the numerous archaeological sites present in the area.

In prehistoric times the anthropogenic presence is detected in the sites of Is Piuncheddas and Is Piuncas Mannas but it is in the Nuragic period that the territory is massively man-made. In the density map of the nuraghi, made by prof. Giovanni Lilliu, Genoni is one of the areas with a density greater than 0.60 nuraghi per km², many of which can still be visited. In fact, the nuraghe of Birìu and that of Santu Perdu are still intact, while scattered in the countryside of the town, you can see the ruins of Perdaligeri, Larunza, Duìdduru, Sussùni, Cijus, Bau-e-peddi, Monticordèris, Corrazzu, Scalamanna, Margini, Lorìas, Coccolò, Addòri, norache Longu, Tresbìas, Corongìu, Santamaria, Giaru and the four called Gurdilonis.

The elevated position of the Santu Antine hill, on which the urban center of Genoni lies, has certainly invited the populations, since ancient times, to settle in this area. In fact, numerous Punic, Roman and most likely also Vandal finds testify that these populations chose to live in both the Giara and the Santu Antine hill.

Also on the top of the Santu Antine hill, the walls of a Punic fortress, the ruins of a Romanesque church dedicated to Sant'Elena and San Costantino Magno and a well built in the Nuragic age 39 meters deep (the deepest in Sardinia) are worthy of mention. interior of which interesting artifacts have been found in stratigraphy, including a rare example of a mechanical winch for lifting water dating back to Roman domination.

The nuragic villages of Santu Pedru, Mammuzzola and on the Giara di Genoni the sites of Bruncu Suergiu and the sacred well of Sa Corona Arrubia confirm the strong anthropic presence since the most remote times even if the town has never reached large dimensions, probably in because of the secluded position with respect to the main streets.

During the Middle Ages it belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea and was part of the curatoria of Parte Valenza. Upon the defeat of the Arborea by the Aragonese (1409) the town passed under the Aragonese dominion and in 1436 it was incorporated into the Viscontea of Sanluri, given as a fief by the king of Aragon Alfonso V the Magnanimous to Giovanni De Sena. Later it passed to Enrico d'Enriquez, uncle of the king of Aragon Ferdinand II, and subsequently to the marquisate of Laconi, of which the Castelvì and then the Aymerich were lords. It was redeemed for the latter in 1839 with the suppression of the feudal system.
