Background

View of the Fucino from the village of Gioia Vecchio

The first traces of the name of Gioia dei Marsi date back to pre-Roman and Roman times, as evidenced by numerous findings in some areas of the municipal territory subjected to geological and archaeological study. Originally three villages were formed here: Templo, Campomizzo and Montagnano, while the village of Gioia Vecchio was built, in the Italic era, with the aim of controlling the access roads and passageways in the Marso area. The center was, however, destroyed by the earthquake of 1915, after which the town was rebuilt in a more comfortable position on the Fucense shore.
