Background

Marsica mountains seen from the lower part of the town

The ancient Cerfennia was an "Oppidum", in the local Safina language "Ocres", that is a fortified town of the Marsi along the ancient Via Valeria. Legend has it that the next medieval village, known at the time as Collis Armelis, or "the old hill", was formed by the survivors of the disappeared Cerfennia who chose the current place to build the new urban agglomeration. In 1806, the year of the abolition of the fiefdoms, Collarmele was administratively aggregated to Pescina and from 1811 to Circle. It was in 1816 that the town gained municipal autonomy. In 1915 the old village was completely destroyed by the Marsica earthquake which caused numerous victims. The Marsican town has been reborn thanks to the industriousness of its inhabitants.
