history
Gollnow is a historic Hanseatic city. In March 1945 the old town and also the peripheral areas were largely destroyed by fighting in the end of World War II. Among other things, former Polish forced laborers were permanently resettled here after the war. Individual objects have been rebuilt, but most of the remaining stock has been supplemented with apartment blocks as appropriate. Goleniów now has more than 30,000 inhabitants again and is developing into a secondary center on the edge of the Szczecin metropolitan area.
location
Goleniów is northeast of the Dam Lake (Jezioro Dąbie), northeast of the city Szczecin. With its districts, the city has a share in the lower reaches of the Or (near Swieta), at Dammscher See (near Lubczybna), on the forest and heathland Puszcza Goleniowska, north and south of the main town. The river flows through the main town Him, the longest right-hand tributary of the Oder; it flows south of Swieta.
