Gosau am Dachstein is a community in Upper Austria in the district Gmunden in the Traunviertel. With approx. 1,750 inhabitants and forms the Gosau valley, a side valley of the upper Trauntal on Lake Hallstatt. The region is part of the Holiday region Dachstein Salzkammergut, on the edge of UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt - Dachstein Salzkammergut.

In the 13th century that became Gosau Valley by monks from St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg first settled. The valley quickly developed into an important supplier of wood for salt production in Hallstatt. Most of the residents worked as lumberjacks, with their own small farm. This also gave rise to the alpine pastures, most of which are still preserved today. The village is at its lowest point 767 meters above sea level, with the highest point in the municipality forming the top of the 2995.01 meter high Dachstein.

The Salzkammergut Federal road B166 leads directly through Gosau, so the following routes are ideal for your journey:
- Motorway A1 from Vienna via Linz, Voralpenkreuz, exit Regau onto the B145 via Gmunden, Bad Ischl, Bad Goisern, then via the B166 to Gosau
- Motorway A1 from Munich via Salzburg, change to the A10 to exit Golling, on the B162 towards Abtenau and finally on the B166 towards Russbach and Gosau
- A9 motorway from Graz to Liezen via the B145 Bad Mitterndorf and Bad Aussee, Bad Goisern

Tourist Attractions
- Gosau lake. The Gosausee is one of the most photographed subjects in the region. In addition to swimming and diving, it serves as a starting point for numerous hiking trails (such as for Adamek Hut and on to High Dachstein).
