Gosau am Dachstein is a community in Upper Austria in the district Gmunden in the Traunviertel. With approx. 1,750 inhabitants and forms the Gosau valley, a side valley of the upper Trauntal on Lake Hallstatt. The region is part of the Holiday region Dachstein Salzkammergut, on the edge of UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt - Dachstein Salzkammergut.

In the 13th century that became Gosau Valley by monks from St. Peter's Abbey in Salzburg first settled. The valley quickly developed into an important supplier of wood for salt production in Hallstatt. Most of the residents worked as lumberjacks, with their own small farm. This also gave rise to the alpine pastures, most of which are still preserved today. The village is at its lowest point 767 meters above sea level, with the highest point in the municipality forming the top of the 2995.01 meter high Dachstein.
