Tourist Attractions

The main attractions are the show caves in the Dachstein massif. They are among the most famous natural monuments in Austria. You can reach them by cable car, which was modernized or completely rebuilt in 2007.

  • 1 Valley station with large parking lot.
  • 2 Schoenbergalm, first section of the cable cars to the middle station, nature park at 1400 m altitude, cave museum, climbing course for children, restaurant. Registration for the cave tours.
  • 1 Dachstein giant ice cave. The entrance to the giant ice cave is a little above the middle station and can be reached in just under 20 minutes. Access only with a guide, duration: approx. 45 minutes. Good shoes and waterproof clothing are recommended. Inside the cave there are bizarre ice formations, which the guides use imaginary names such as Parsival or Grail Castle. My own imagination led me to believe that other terms were different.
  • 2 Mammoth cave You reach the entrance of the cave from the Schönbergalm in approx. 20 minutes and then wait for a guide, duration of the tour: approx. 45 minutes. The name of the cave is derived from the size of the cave system, it is one of the largest European limestone caves with 62 kilometers of explored caves. The corridors are sometimes quite narrow, sometimes larger than a subway shaft, and often it drips from the ceiling.
  • 3 Dachstein Krippenstein mountain station second section of the cable cars at an altitude of approx. 2100 m. On the high plateau there is
  • 3 World Heritage Spiral with a panoramic view, surrounded by some relaxation loungers
