background

The municipal area comprises a total of eight localities:

  • Ellends
  • Fistritz
  • Groß-Siegharts (by far the largest settlement in the municipality with almost 2000 inhabitants)
  • Loibes
  • Sieghartsles
  • Woodland Empire
  • Weeping
  • Wienings

Groß-Siegharts was first mentioned in a document in 1299. From 1720, the small town was developed into a center of the textile industry under Johann Christoph Ferdinand Graf von Mallenthein. As a result, skilled workers from all over Europe settled in the Waldviertel, 180 "Fabrics-Häusl" were built in Groß-Siegharts, in which the families lived and worked and, above all, produced "Bandlwaren", which they sold as sole proprietors to traveling dealers. The "Bandltrager" sold these throughout the entire Danube Monarchy and the region was given the unofficial name "Bandlkramerlandl".

In the second half of the 19th century there were 6 textile factories in Groß-Siegharts, around 1900 the local ribbon weaving mills employed several hundred people. The textile industry in the Waldviertel fell into crisis in the post-war period and could no longer keep up economically with the competition from the Far East. The last weaving mill closed in the 1980s. Groß-Siegharts became a market town in 1727 and a town in 1928.
