As Great North, Spanish Norte Grande, is the northernmost region of Chile. The landscape is shaped by the Atacama Desert.

Other goals
- 4 San Pedro de Atacama , small, touristic place in an oasis of the Atacama desert, near the border with Bolivia and Argentina. Popular travel destination because of numerous natural beauties such as salt lakes and geysers.

getting there
As in all regions of Chile, Ruta 5 is the Panamericana, the main axis of the region. It also connects the region with the south of Peru.
From Argentina there is a tarred road pass, the Paso de Jama.

The climate is extremely dry - the Atacama Desert is the driest area in the world after Antarctica - but fog can form in the coastal area, especially in winter and spring, which allows for little vegetation there.
