How to get around

What see

  • 1 Distinguished parish collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The church was founded in the Norman era in Romanesque style, it is said following a vow made by Goffredo d'Altavilla who, after the conquest of Guglionesi, also fortified the city. The body of the patron Saint Adam, who lived between the 10th and 11th centuries, was buried in the building. It is not known where it is currently, since in 1567 it was moved from the crypt and given a location that has remained unknown.
The building was restored for the first time in 1187; then rebuilt in 1796. It has a Latin cross plan. The main altar houses a sixteenth-century panel of the Assumption. The altar of the patron saint of the city, St. Adam, houses a painting by Bardellino depicting St. Adam in ecstasy: in the background the panorama of Colleniso (ancient name of Guglionesi) with its fortifications is revealed.
The remaining altars boast statues and paintings of good workmanship and from different eras, as well as a choir and an eighteenth-century hand-carved walnut pulpit.
In the crypt some frescoes show scenes from the Old Testament.
  • 2 Church of Sant'Antonio di Padova. Small church in the historic center, with a portal and rose window from the 15th century.
  • Church of San Nicola di Bari. Legend has it that the church was built in one night by devils. In the salient façade it shows a rose window of ashlars; the lunette of the portal has a bas-relief with lion and griffin facing each other, while on the sides blind arches decorate the whole base of the building, continuing on the sides and on the external apses.
The interior with three naves has pillars with pointed arches. The presbytery is preceded by a spectacular staircase.

  • Walk of the sources and source of Sant'Adamo.
