Campomarino (Këmarini in arbëreshë) is a city of Molise.

To know

It is one of the four municipalities of Molise whose population descends from the Albanians fleeing the Ottoman dominion and preserves traditions, customs and language of origin, the arbëreshë, that is theMolise Albanian. The other centers are Ururi, Portocannone is Montecilfone.

Geographical notes

Located along the Adriatic coast, it forms a single urban agglomeration with the marine settlements with Termoli; the overall population residing in the Termoli - Campomarino coastal strip amounts to more than 40,000 inhabitants. The ancient town was once on the sea, now it is located about two kilometers inland, on a spur on the right side of the mouth of the Biferno. It is 7 km from Termoli, 25 from Larino, 38 from Vast, 50 from San Severo, 58 from Campobasso, 88 from Rodi Garganico.

Background

The territory of Campomarino has been inhabited since the 19th-18th century BC. as evidenced by the remains of the settlement discovered in 1980 in the locality of Arcora. The studies of the historian Cluverio and the bishop of Larino, Monsignor Tria identify the territory of Campomarino, or a large part of it with the ancient city of Cliternia Frentana, a city of Frentana which later became a flourishing Roman city, active from the republican period up to the entire imperial period.Destroyed several times during the barbarian invasions, in particular by the Goths, it managed to rise again and become a center of Lombard and Norman importance. At the beginning of the Angevin period the town belonged to the fief of the d'Alneto family. In the fifteenth century it passed under the dominion of the Monforte to be subsequently donated by Cola Monforte to the Royal Court.

The earthquake of 1456 severely damaged the town. A few years after the Ottoman advance in the Balkans determined a vast Albanian emigration along the Adriatic coasts of the Italian peninsula: many were those who settled in the fief of Campomarino and rebuilt the town. From 1461 to 1470, Giorgio Castriota Skanderberg, Albanian hero prince of Croia, sent an expeditionary force of about 5,000 Albanians led by his nephew Coiro Stresio to help Ferrante I of Aragon in the fight against John of Anjou. Coiro Stresio defeated, on August 18, 1461, in Lago di Sangue, placed between the Greeks, Orsara di Puglia and Troy, the partisan troops of Giovanni d'Angiò led by Piccinino. The populations, and also Campomarino, then underwent what was the third migration in the history of the Albanian colonies in Italy. For the services rendered, prince Scanderbeg was granted feudal rights over Mount Gargano, San Giovanni Rotondo is Trani and the soldiers and their families were allowed to settle in further territories. The Albanian settlers re-founded the lands and lived in peaceful coexistence for a long time with the local population. After various Governments, among which that of Count Manelfrido stands out, from 1503 the power passed to the Di Sangro family, which was the last owner of the town before the abolition of feudalism.
