The Hallig Gröde is the third largest Hallig in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and belongs to the North Frisian Islands. It consists of the no longer inhabited former Hallig Appelland in the north and the inhabited Hallig Gröde in the south. At the beginning of the 20th century, Gröde and Appelland grew together after a creek between the two Halligen was interrupted with a dam for reasons of coastal protection.

According to an official census (as of September 30, 2019), ten residents live on Hallig Gröde. It is therefore the smallest independent municipality in Germany. In every federal election, the Hallig Gröde election results are always the first to be determined. The small Hallig Habel, the smallest Hallig of the North Frisian Islands, also belongs to the political community of Gröde. This is only manned by a bird warden in summer, entry is strictly forbidden. The stone edge that almost completely surrounds Gröde protects the island from loss of land during storm surges. With the exception of the two terps, the Hallig is flooded an average of twenty to thirty times during the course of the year. Both terps are surrounded by ring dikes so that they can withstand storm surges, and all residential buildings on the first floor have a shelter. The entire Hallig has only five houses, which are spread over the Knudswarft and the Kirchwarft. Neu-Peterswarft, which was destroyed at the end of the 19th century, on the way to the landing stage, is now used as a storage facility for building materials.

Before the February flood of 1825, there were 23 houses on the then three independent Halligen Gröde, Appelland and Habel, eight of which were destroyed. In 1825 there were still 90 inhabitants on Hallig Gröde. By 1874 this number halved.
