The trade road is a combined walking route of the German Töddenweg and the first part of the Dutch pedlar path.

The name Handelsweg was chosen because both the Dutch peddlers as the German Tödden[1] were traders (see also teut). The route is marked in two directions from Osnabrück to Deventer. The Handelsweg is part of the European walking route E11, which runs from the Polish-Lithuanian border via Poland and Germany to The Hague in the Netherlands. In Osnabrück, the Handelsweg is preceded by the Wittekindsweg, in Deventer the Handelsweg is followed by the Marskramerpad part II.

The organization has placed signs in many places along the route indicating the route.

Safety

A tick is smaller than the head of a match

The E11 is a very safe walking route. The greatest danger lies in an almost invisible small animal: the tick. Ticks can (to varying degrees; in some regions almost 100% of ticks are infected) be carriers of two life-threatening parasites. Lyme disease, which is spread by tick bites, occurs throughout the E11 region. You cannot vaccinate against this disease, but you should check yourself every evening for the presence of ticks. Once infected, a course of antibiotics is necessary. Other dangers along the route are minor: wild boars and other large game are generally shy.

Directions

Töddenweg

This part of the route is 123 km[2] long. The route is for the most part also suitable for cycling. Partly for this reason, an important part of the route is asphalted. The Tödden came from the Westphalian country, in particular the places Mettingen, Hopsten and Recke. Recke is located a few kilometers from the route, the route runs through the center of Mettingen and Hopsten.

Marskramerpad part I

This part of the route is 95 km[2][3] long. This part runs through a varied landscape over the gently sloping land of salland and Twente.
