Haría is a municipality in the northeast of the island Lanzarote and has around 5,000 inhabitants. About 1000 of them live in the main town of the same name, which is located at an altitude of 270 m in the valley of 1000 palm trees. The rest is spread over several towns, the largest of which are Arneta, Máguez, Mala, Órzola and Punta Mujeres.

background

The municipality of Haría is surrounded by water on three sides, only in the south it borders on the old island capital Teguise. Both places have in common that they have repeatedly been the target of pirates throughout their history. In one of these attacks in 1586, all of the palm trees were burned down. In 1618 the residents withdrew to the Cueva de los Verdes, but their hiding place was betrayed. From the 18th century onwards, the town developed steadily, but after 1900 a gradual exodus from the countryside began. Although there are a number of attractions in the area of the municipality, Haría has remained largely untouched by the tourism boom, a large part of the population still lives from agriculture.

getting there

Two roads lead to Haría from the south, one of them is the LZ-1, it comes from Arrecife and leads via Tahiche to Arrieta and further on LZ-10 to Haría, total distance about 30 km, the journey goes over a relatively flat, scenic route.

The journey on the is just as long LZ-10 from Arrecife via Tahiche and Teguise to Los Valles, past the wind turbines of Parque Eolico to Haría. However, you should take your time for this route, the landscape is very beautiful and there are several viewpoints that invite you to linger. The road is largely well developed, but very winding.
