Haren is centrally located in the Emsland between Meppen and Papenburg an der Ems. The municipality borders directly on the Netherlands through the villages of Rütenbrock, Schwartenberg, Lindloh and Fehndorf. Like the rest of the Emsland, Haren is only a few meters above sea level.

- 5 St. Martinus Church - A church could already be found here in the Middle Ages. This was built over in the 19th century by a new church in the neo-Romanesque style. Some walls and the bell tower with bells from the years 1510, 1650 and 1921 remain from the old church. The dome is 58 meters high and the church has 800 seats. The St. Martinus Church is popularly known as the Emsland Cathedral. In the main windows of the aisles there is a depiction of the stoning of St. Stephen and a depiction of St. Henry. These have been added in honor of the main donors of the church building, Henri and Stefan Esders. - The 13.5 km long 6 Haren-Rütenbrock Canal connects Haren with the community Vlagtwedde and is therefore one of the few waterways that connect Germany and the Netherlands. This canal was built in the late 19th century and was intended for cargo ships up to 200 tons. As a side effect, further drainage of the bogs could be achieved here. Today the canal with its four locks and ten movable bridges is a listed building. There is a speed limit of 5 km / h and only ships that are shorter than 33 meters and not more than 6 meters wide are allowed to pass through the canal.
