Hückelhoven is a town in the district of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia at the Lower Rhine.

background

Hückelhoven is a rural medium-sized town in the Rhineland and is located about 35 km southwest of Mönchengladbach and about 40 km north of Aachen in the Rurtal. The city has 38,593 residents in 11 districts. The cities of Erkelenz, Geilenkirchen, Heinsberg and Wassenberg, (all districts of Heinsberg), as well as the city of Linnich and the municipality of Titz (both districts of Düren) border on Hückelhoven. On January 1, 1972, the city of Hückelhoven was also restructured with the municipal reorganization the districts of Altmyhl, Baal, Brachelen, Doveren, Hilfarth, Hückelhoven, Kleingladbach, Millich, Ratheim, Rurich, and Schaufenberg.

In the last 100 years, Hückelhoven has developed from a place with a village character - through the coal mining industry - to a medium-sized town with almost 40,000 inhabitants. At times, up to 6,000 people were employed at the colliery. The city developed into a flourishing business location. The news that the colliery closed in 1997 was all the more rigid. More than 5000 people lost their jobs. New branches of industry and intelligent economic development have made Hückelhoven a modern, service-oriented location that is looking forward to your visit.
