Karlstadt is a historic city in Main triangle in Lower Franconia in the northern Bavaria. It is the district town of the Main-Spessart district.

background

The city has a total of around 15,000 inhabitants, who are spread over the following districts: Karlstadt, Heßlar, Karlburg, Gambach, Laudenbach, Mühlbach, Rohrbach, Stadelhofen, Stetten and Wiesenfeld. The Karlstadt district is the largest with around 7,000 inhabitants. In the area you will find several nature reserves with rare plant and animal species, numerous vineyards and the first foothills of the Spessarts. The climate is very mild and rather dry.

Karlstadt was planned around 1200 "on the drawing board", i.e. the streets and alleys run almost at right angles to each other. The city was dimensioned by Konrad von Querfurt so that the settlement was completely within the city walls until the 19th century. Large parts of the old town have been extensively restored.

Karlstadt is often called Karscht or Karscht am Mee in the area, the residents are called Flaak or Karschter Flaak. The name goes back to an old story, according to which a Karschter farmer's son fell in love with a girl from Waldsassengau. He made hints to her that he was rich. When the girl wanted to check the alleged wealth, she took the farmer's son for a walk down the hall. At every better piece of land he stopped, knocked on his knees and said: "Dar Flaak there, dar g listening to me!" The girl was puzzled by the wealth and asked the authorities, where she learned that the farmer's son did not own any land. At every stop the farmer's son had only pointed to a stain on his trousers. The story spread at lightning speed and the name Karschter Flaak was born.[1]

Old town

historical town hall
Parish Church of St. Andrew

The Karlstadt district has one old town well worth seeing with a large number of preserved and restored half-timbered houses from the 16th to 18th centuries. Many of the buildings are listed. The right-angled streets are relatively narrow, so that the number of cars in the old town remains manageable. Parking is possible in many places outside the city wall. In the old town, numerous ice cream parlors and restaurants invite you to linger. There are also some smaller shops.

  • 1  historical town hall, Marketplace 1. The historic town hall in the center of the old town was built in 1422 as a town hall, department store and dance hall. The facade facing the market square is designed as a stepped gable. The outside staircase was originally the only access to the upper hall. The stone parapet of the proclamation podium bears the coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn. On the gable of the historic town hall, above the town hall clock, in a niche, stands the “Schwedenmännle”, created in 1718 by the Karlstadt sculptor Kilian Schüßler. It has become a symbol of the city and plays the mercenary song "From the beret, the spring sways" every day at 12 noon, 4 pm, 6 pm and 8 pm on the trumpet. According to tradition, the male is supposed to represent a Swedish trumpeter who was forgotten during the hasty withdrawal of the Swedish crew and remained on the lookout in the gable of the town hall.
  • 2  Catholic parish church of St. Andreas, Church square 9. The Catholic parish church of St. Andrew was built from the 14th century on the foundation walls of a late Romanesque basilica. Remains of the old church are z. B. can still be seen on the west tower.[2] The main part of the three-nave church is built in the Gothic style. The interior of the church contains a number of art treasures from all centuries of the city's history. These include sculptures and epitaphs, a stone pulpit, stained glass windows, an old organ and much more.

Of the City fortifications Large parts of the walls and towers have been preserved. On the outside of the city fortifications, there is a green area through which a winding path meanders. The city fortifications also include:

  • 3  Maintor with the Maintorturm. The main gate forms the western entrance to the city. The flood levels of the last centuries, when the Main was not yet canalized, are marked on the outside of the Main Gate. It used to be an important transshipment point for shipping. Today river cruise ships dock further north.
  • 4  Upper gate. The upper gate is in the south of the old town. The name is derived from the direction of flow of the Main. The upper gate consists of the high gate tower and the gatehouse in front of it. A wooden bridge on pillars spanned the moat between the gatehouse and the gate tower. The latter, however, was completely backfilled in the 19th century. The upper gate tower is popularly known as the "cat tower". The name goes back to the last town tower, who survived a fall from the penultimate floor onto a large brushwood pile in the main street like a cat unscathed while pulling up firewood.
  • 5  Bridge tower (mill tower). The bridge tower is located in the extreme southwest of the old town. After the bridge was built, taxes were collected here. The older name Mühlturm goes back to the earlier use. Right next to the mill tower is the one that was only uncovered and restored in 1991 Horse mill. The wooden grinder, which was powered by horses, has been painstakingly reconstructed.

Karlsburg ruin

  • 6  Karlsburg. The Karlsburg on the opposite side of the Main was built in the 10th century and rebuilt several times. During the Peasants' War in 1525 it was destroyed by the Karlstadt citizens and is only preserved as a ruin. From the ruins you have a wonderful view over Karlstadt and the Main Valley.
