In 965 AD. a place near the Grafentafel rock, which belongs to the Duvensteins (see sights), is mentioned for the first time in writing. In another document from 1088, the place Lina in the Teutoburg Forest is mentioned for the first time.

By train

There is a stop in the district of Kattenvenne 1 Kattenvenne station (10 km southwest of the center of Lienen). The regional train (RB66) Münster – Osnabrück stops here every hour. To get to the actual Lienen, it is better to get off in Lengerich and take the R46 bus there (departure always 7 minutes after the arrival of the regional train from Osnabrück, 15 minutes after the arrival of the RB from Münster). The next options for changing from long-distance transport can be found in Muenster and Osnabrück.

Tourist Attractions

  • The 1 Evangelical Church Lienen dates from the 12th century. Of this original church, only the west tower remains. The church in its current form dates from the early 19th century. Inside, however, there are still older objects such as a chandelier from the 17th century.
  • The 2 Barefoot park - A 2 km long circular route leads the visitor without shoes through various experience zones in order to strengthen the vitality and the sense of touch in their feet. Subsurfaces such as clay, grass or warm and cold water await the visitor. Entry is free.
  • 3 Duvenstones - Rock formations that protrude from the floor of the Teutoburg Forest in Holperdorp. The name can be translated literally as dark mother. The places were used as places of worship in the distant past.
  • 4 Holperdorper court exhibition - The artists Wendelin Gräbener and Franz Winkelkotte live in the district of Holperdorf and organize a court exhibition with various artists once a year (in August).
