The Cistercian Abbey of Marienstatt was founded in 1212. It is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate Streithausen and is close to the middle center Hachenburg in the Westerwaldkreis. It is a monastery with the early Gothic abbey church Our Lady of Marienstatt, which was built as a basilica between 1222 and 1425, as well as a guest house, a brewery and restaurant as well as a grammar school. The largest organ in the Westerwald is in the church.
The abbey is directly on the Nest. The location in a river valley directly on the water is typical of the monasteries of the Cistercian order founded at the beginning of the 12th century.
