Meßstetten is there on the Great Heuberg, where the Alb is highest at an altitude of 907 m, making it the highest town in Baden-Württemberg. The city is one of the Zollernalb.

Meßstetten is located in a sparsely populated region of the Swabian Alb on the Great Heuberg. Six formerly independent smaller communities and several hamlets belong to the city. Between Meßstetten and the south-west Stetten am kalten Markt is the Heuberg military training area. To the north of Meßstetten is the Albtrauf, where hiking trails lure with spectacular views.
