Montegridolfo is a center ofEmilia Romagna.

To know

The town is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

Geographical notes

On the Apennine hills of Romagna, a short distance from the beaches of the Romagna Riviera, the town is located in the Val Conca (or Valconca), in the Apennine area of Rimini generically called, by extension, Valmarecchia.

When to go

Summer is perhaps the busiest season, with many tourists who go up from the Adriatic beaches to admire the village and to enjoy a few hours of refreshment; but spring and autumn are also magical seasons: one to see the awakening of nature, the other to be amazed by the infinity of colors with which the deciduous woods cover the slopes of the mountains. In addition, autumn is also the season of harvesting chestnuts and mushrooms.

Background

Montegridolfo has always been a borderland, over the centuries both the influence of the Duchy of Montefeltro and that of the Malatesta family, so much so that over the years the Malatesta keep was the subject of clashes and military disputes. And it is precisely for this defensive peculiarity that Montegridolfo was designed and built as a "keep", that is a village with a rectangular plan with a tower reinforcing the wall complex. The area of Montegridolfo was once called Monte Lauro because it abounded in laurel trees, later the name changed to Mons Gredulfus, thus giving rise to the modern toponym.

In the thirteenth century it passed under the Malatesta rule. Due to this peculiarity of Rimini, given that Montegridolfo swore allegiance to the Malatestas against the Duchy of Urbino, it was the site of numerous attacks and military raids that culminated in the paradoxical looting by the soldiers of Ferrantino Novello, cousin of the Malatesta, who allied himself with the Montefeltro - destroyed the village, but the reconstruction was rapid and in 1337 we can speak of Montegridolfo as we know it now, with high walls and efficiently fortified.

Like most of the communes of Romagna it passed under the dominion of Valentino in 1500; soon followed the reconquest by the Malatesta, who however sold it to Venice, which resold it to the Papal State. More recent history sees it inserted in the context of the history of Italy; not to be forgotten is the route of the Gothic Line, the German defense line that in these areas saw the unfolding of bloody clashes between the Germans and the allied troops, as the breakthrough of the allied troops in the Po Valley would have made Germany a few months: it was during the attack by the allied forces on Montegridolfo that Lieutenant Gerard Ross Norton earned the Victoria Cross, the highest British military honor.

In recent years the village has undergone an extensive restoration which, keeping the architecture intact, has strongly revalued and embellished Montegridolfo which has rightfully entered into the ranks of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

What see

Bastion and southern walls
  • Castle and fortifications. The castle encloses with its walls the small ancient village which has remained intact. Built by the Malatesta family, it has been wonderfully restored. The alleys between small houses are surrounded by sturdy walls with embankments and towers.
  • Church of San Rocco (Just outside the walls). It was built in 1427 and has also been a hospital. It preserves a painting by Guido Cagnacci, a seventeenth-century Rimini artist who was a valuable author: Madonna and Child with Saints Rocco, Giacinto and Sebastiano; Also of interest are the frescoes by an anonymous 15th-century Marchesan and by Girolamo Marchesi di Cotignola from 1520/25.
  • Church of San Pietro. Built towards the valley, it was of very ancient origin; it was rebuilt from the foundations after the damage suffered during the Second World War. There is a well-made fresco by an anonymous artist from the fifteenth century: Christ Crucified between Mary and Saint John the Evangelist with Magdalene and angels. The landscape in the background reproduces the castles of Mondaino, Montefiore, Montegridolfo, Montelevecchie (today Belvedere Fogliense) and Saludecio.
  • Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie (In Trebbio). The place of worship preserves a painting by Pompeo Morganti, an artist of Fano, which represents the apparition of the Madonna. The landscape depicted reproduces the hills of Mongridolfo, its castle and its walls.
  • Museum of the Line of the Goths. It is equipped with rich material in memory of the passage of the front between late August and early September 1944. Various weapons and relics of the opposing armies are exhibited, while a section is specifically dedicated to propaganda printed matter from the period of German, Fascist and Allied production.
