Background

Montenero di Bisaccia is a town of ancient origins. It originated from the village of Bisaccia, of which it has retained the name and whose ruins are still partly visible about a kilometer from the town. The village was abandoned with the barbarian invasions, when the inhabitants first took refuge in the sandstone caves, then they began to settle on the hill called "black mountain" for the dense bush that covered it.

How to get around

What see

  • Parish Church of San Matteo Apostolo. The church with three naves has a majestic appearance and is equipped with a vast agglomeration of buildings for religious use: rectory, oratories.
  • Church of San Paolo.
  • 1 Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Bisaccia. The Sanctuary was built in 1811 on a hill on the ruins of a previous building destroyed by various seismic events. The church, initially with a single nave, in its present form dates back to the works that doubled its size in 1899. The interior with three naves ends with a central apse, while the two lateral ones are linear. There is venerated an image painted on a tablet, dating back to the thirteenth century, which depicts the Madonna and Child.
The niches of the side walls house papier-mache statues.
  • Montenero Tower. Built a short distance from the sea, the tower must have had a sighting and defense function, and was probably in visual connection with the coastal towers of Termoli and of Petacciato. All three are square in plan; the Montenero tower, however, is higher. The entrance is open below the level of the base floor, with a staircase. It was probably built later, since you can recognize the signs of the existence of a drawbridge.
The walls are almost completely closed, except for four small windows, one on each side of different heights, with strong splaying.
A construction date is not known; however, in consideration of its sighting function it can be considered as already existing in the sixteenth century.
  • Neolithic caves.
