Naples was founded by the Greeks as Partenope and is one of the oldest cities in the world.
It is terraced over the Gulf of Naples, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
The population of Naples is close to 1 million (2004), and the city complex is over 3 million. It is the third most populous city in Italy.
In and around Naples, the inhabitants speak a specific Neapolitan dialect.
Naples is the main economic, cultural and scientific center of southern Italy. There is a university in Naples that was founded in 1224.

Naples International Airport (Aeroporto di Napoli-Capodichino, IATA: NAP) located 7 km from the city center. It is the largest airport in Campania and one of the largest in Italy.
