Geographical notes
Nesso is located about halfway along the eastern coast of the Como branch of thehomonymous lake, or the one between capital is Bellagio. It extends from the shore of the lake towards the Tivano plain which constitutes the heart of the Larian Triangle. In altitude it goes from 199 m a.s.l. of the coast line to 1,417 at Mount Preaola.
When to go
The temperate climate of the region makes it possible to visit Nesso at any time of the year. Furthermore, if sunny days offer the opportunity to admire the colors of the lake landscape, it should be noted that rainy days give impetuosity to the streams that feed the waterfall of the ravine.
Background
The first written document to mention Nessus is an act of Berengario II of 942 for a concession of privileges to the monastery of Santa Maria del Senatore in Pavia. It is known that it became a parish church but there are only fragments of information on this historical phase. During the war between Como and Milan (1118-1127) Nesso sided with the Milanese and was therefore attacked and destroyed by the Como. Finished permanently starting from 1168 in the orbit of influence of Como, it followed the historical and political events.
Starting from 1295 the presence of the order of the Umiliati is attested in the hamlet of Vico. During the Middle Ages, thanks to the energy of the local streams, an economy based on the processing and spinning of wool in the numerous mills developed and established, the last of which will close in the late 20th century.
How to orient yourself
The morphology of the territory has strongly influenced the development of Nesso which is made up of various locations scattered on the steep slopes of the mountains that flow into the lake.
- Borgovecchio it is the coastal part north of the Colmenace stream with the oldest part of the settlement
- Coatesa it is the coastal part that goes from the mouth of the Colmenace stream to the crack of the ravine, which is also the mouth of the Noseè stream.
- Castle it is the part grown around the castle which stands on a spur on the left of the ravine.
- Lissogno, the part overlooking Coatesa, was formed near the Tuff stream to exploit its waters in the various mills.
- Vico, is the part traditionally with an agricultural vocation built where the slopes begin to become less harsh along the road that leads to the Tivano plain.
