background

Nittenau was first mentioned in a document in 1007, from 1345 annual and weekly markets of regional importance took place in the town. In 1779, a major fire destroyed most of the houses in Nittenau. Fire disasters in the early 19th century. and regular flooding threw the town back in its development. On the river island on the Anger there was an iron processing industry and a connecting line to the Upper Palatinate Railway led to industrial development after 1907, which made the town a target of an air raid at the end of the Second World War. In 1953 the community received town charter, development went in the direction of the settlement of industrial companies north of the rain and promotion of tourism as part of the "Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park". In addition to the river Regen, the attractions are the castles built on the surrounding hills (and still preserved castle ruins); in the Festival "The Ghost Walk" legends from the Regental are played out in the castles Hof, Stefling and Stockenfels.
