Water walking on the rain - Wasserwandern auf dem Regen

The rain is the largest river in Bavaria with a length of 156 km Upper Palatinate.

View over the rain to Ramspau

The 107 km long river stretch from the backwater of the Blaibach reservoir resp. the union of white and black rain at Pulling near Blaibach was called Water hiking trail expanded and is very suitable for multi-day vacation trips as well as just day trips.

The sixteen weirs are all well signposted and relocatable and some are also mobile. The route is lined with numerous restaurants and overnight accommodations in the towns of the Upper Palatinate. Thanks to a regional train connection from the end of the journey to regensburg up to the point of insertion Blaibach or Cham (Upper Palatinate) the vehicle can be retrieved with reasonable effort.

background

Rain (river map)

The source rivers from the Czech - Bavarian border region around the border town Eisenstein flow as Big rain until union with the Little rain at Zwiesel. From then on, the body of water is called Black Rain designated. The White rainarises as Seebach from the small Arbersee also near the Czech border. When pulling near Bad Kötzting the two rivers unite and from here on the body of water is called rain designated.

"Beware of stones" in the river Regen

The White rain is easier to navigate according to the information in the DKV canoe guide, the Black rain provides with the routes from the town rain higher demands on the whitewater experience. The route at Bärenloch and Gumpenrieder Schwall with white water up to IV is reserved for experienced canoeists. Due to serious accidents, life jackets and hard hats must be worn on the section rain to Teisnach Mandatory. This is followed by longer transfer points and longer paddling sections on the Höllensteinsee and the Blaibacher reservoirs for hiking paddlers, so that the tour is best planned from Blaibach, especially for inexperienced paddlers.

From the frequently used insertion point below the dam of the Blaibacher reservoir resp. from the road bridge of Blaibach is the rain than Water hiking trail developed and with little difficulty (tame water - wild water I) and weirs that are easy to move around, also mobile for inexperienced paddlers. The water hiking trail is divided into five daily stages that can be easily mastered on one day, well documented and signposted on site.

Despite the brownish-boggy color, the water of the rain is olive-brown-cloudy after rainfalls, of good quality, but the river bed and the stones hidden here and also the depth of the river are often barely recognizable. In the section from Blaibach to Cham and especially in the Regental to Nittenau there are countless rounded rocks in the river bed. Some of them protrude above the surface of the water (and only lead to abrupt evasive maneuvers if the boat operator is inattentive). More insidious are those just below the surface of the water that draw attention to themselves with little rippling of the water surface at low flow speeds.

preparation

Bathing pleasure in the rain

Boat material:

  • Section Blaibach / Regensburg: The route can be traveled with kayaks and also with walking canoes (single and double) without any problems. Due to the murky water, boulders in the water can often not be seen early, which makes the use of plastic boats (Royalex) preferable. Even with kevlar boats and folding canoes you have to be careful when navigating. In summer after periods of drought, the floods can repeatedly hit the ground. Many of the round rocks in the water are smooth and mossy. Unfortunately, there are also numerous "angular fellows" hiding. This also applies to the banks, which are largely built over the entire course.
There is little danger from tree corpses, some of which are hidden below the water level, which can lead to boat damage or capsizing.

equipment: The equipment required in terms of clothing, safety equipment, provisions, etc. depends to a large extent on your own requirements as well as on the duration of the tour. Even if the rain is shallow for long stretches and the banks are always within reach for experienced swimmers, in the interest of your own safety, wearing a life jacket / swimming aid is recommended, at least for children.

For Day tours (Recommended and also "managed" by landlords are the stages in particular Blaibach - Cham (Possibly only half-day tour to Chamerau) or Nittau - Rampspau). These tours can be started in the rental boat with little provisions and water, swimming trunks, sunscreen and a photo camera.
Are particularly attractive Multi-day toursfor which all equipment must be carried. Then you need a tent (mosquito repellent), sleeping bag and mats, mosquito repellent, respectively. Incense coils, clothing, sun protection and water shoes, possibly a petrol or gas stove - and the hiking canoe is quickly fully loaded. Drinks and bread rolls are available in many places along the way. There are drinking water points at numerous rest stops. Restaurants can be found in all localities in the Upper Palatinate, which is well catered for.
One of his own Boat cart is especially important when moving at the weir of Stefling (after Nittenau) extremely helpful. Portages with the loaded walking canoe are also made much easier. However, many insertion and release points are designed in the form of stairs (some with wooden plank protection) and cannot be passed with the boat trolley. The boat must be lifted out of the water.

Accommodation and meals: Catering options in typical Bavarian restaurants and beer gardens can be found almost everywhere near the river, even more often at camping or sports grounds, at least a simple drink bar.

Campsites: At the stage locations, you will always find simply furnished tent sites or hiking paddler meadows with toilets, showers, drinking water points and disposal facilities geared to the needs of water hikers.

Canoe rental

Several boat rental companies offer kayaks and walking canoes for rent. A simple overview plan with the conditions on the course of the route, waterproof bags, paddles and life jackets are handed in. As a rule, you need to bring a boat cart yourself.

Nittenau - Ramspau (19,5 km)

  • Km 29,7 - 64 Marienthal at the Regenknie
