Background

Noventa Vicentina (from “nova entia”: new lands), center of the province of Vicenza already characterized by human presence in prehistoric times and densely inhabited in Roman times, it recalls in its name the reclamation work carried out after the disastrous floods of the Lombard age.

Heavily involved in the struggles between the Municipalities and the Empire like the whole of Vicenza, Noventa, which since 1404 had become part of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, finds in the following century, after the conclusion of the troubled events linked to the League of Cambrai (1508), the conditions that allow it to develop economically and socially.

The Vicentino will follow the fate of Venice to the end and after the fall of the Serenissima it will pass under Austrian domination, and then become part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

What see

Villa Barbarigo Noventa Vicentina by Marcok itwiki 2009-08-08 n03 rect
  • 1 Villa Barbarigo (Villa Barbarigo Rezzonico, now the Town Hall). Late 16th century patrician villa located in the center of Noventa Vicentina, also referred to as Villa Barbarigo Rezzonico, reflecting the marriage alliances between the various Venetian noble families who owned the house; since the end of the 19th century it has been used as a municipal seat. It is a rural palace built starting from 1588 by an unknown Venetian architect from the circle of Vincenzo Scamozzi. The building replaced a previous residence. With an imposing structure due to its height, the villa stands out for the frescoed decorations of the interiors by artists including Antonio Foler, Antonio Vassilacchi (the Aliense) and Luca da Reggio (Luca Ferrari).
The central loggia extends over three floors to give impetus to the top of the factory, an aim also pursued by the pyramids that crown the facade. The rear part, which initially seemed to be the one without "officiality", was subsequently altered with the addition of protruding bodies.
The villa as a whole and above all by virtue of the barchesse, expresses a sort of balance and grandeur. In front of the building is the square of Noventa Vicentina, with an imposing fountain in the center that commemorates the war dead.
As the seat of the municipal administration of Noventa Vicentina, the villa can be visited every day during office hours.
Villa Manin Cantarella
  • 2 Villa Manin Cantarella. Villa Veneta was the subject of an extensive renovation in 1883, by the Vicentine architect Antonio Caregaro Negrin; it is the birthplace of Umberto Masotto., captain of the Italian Royal Army and Gold Medal for Military Valor.
The villa was built between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century by nobles of Venice in the period that saw the construction of the Palladian villas and Venetian villas, a symbol of the growing interest of the nobles for the activities of the mainland and for landed possessions. : At the end of the eighteenth century, after the fall of the Venetian government (May 1797), run by the Doge Lodovico Manin, the villa passed to the Masotto family. The Manin agricultural estate began to be subdivided and gradually new roads and buildings surrounded the villa, which nevertheless retained a vast park (about 8000 m²). In 1882 it became the property of Bortolo Cantarella who entrusted the renovation to the architect Antonio Caregaro Negrin. The building is still private property. The rooms on the main floor, the barns, as well as the cellars are used to host private events and cultural events.
The villa is located north-west of the Duomo and was once in the open countryside. Conceived on two floors, it takes up the typology of the large central hall on the noble floor, raised above the vast basement with cross vaults (the ancient cellars). : Some of the internal rooms, as well as the central hall, have numerous frescoes of remarkable workmanship and in good condition. Above the main floor there is a large attic of the same size as the other two floors. An elegant toothed cornice underlines the eaves line; a central dormer window and four very high pyramidal chimneys give vertical momentum to the building.
Next to the body of the villa are the large barchesse, consisting of four round arches and characterized by pictorial decorations that recall their agricultural vocation. Leaning against the north-west side of the barchesse stands a building dating back to the second half of the 19th century. The large central staircase stands out on the front facade; above the main door a stone molding welds the two side-by-side windows so that the three central elements take on an importance appropriate to the considerable size of the long facade of the building. Leaning against the north-west side of the villa is another building dating back to the second half of the 19th century, characterized by an octagonal staircase.
During the last decade of the twentieth century and the early 2000s, steps were taken to restore the park to its former glory, redoing the paths of the English garden and rebuilding the central flowerbed with the palm tree, a typical element of the gardens of the thirties.
In 2010, during the restoration of the floors and walls of the large cellars, some frescoes still in good condition were recovered: on one side they depict the Annunciation with the figures of the angel and the Madonna. On the opposite wall you can see the figures of St. Joseph, St. John the Baptist and St. Anthony of Padua with St. Francis of Paola: given that the latter saint was canonized in 1519 it is assumed that these paintings are later than this date. . Thanks to the restoration work, the well-made frescoes have been brought back to their original colors: from the important discovery and other construction details of the cellar rooms, it is assumed that the villa was built on the foundations of a pre-existing building, a building is assumed religious. In fact, of two churches existing in Noventa already in medieval times, one has never been located and disappeared from documentary evidence at the beginning of the Renaissance.
  • Villa Arnaldi - Prosdocimi, Via Alcide De Gaspari. patrician villa of the sixteenth century.
  • Villa Albrizzi (in the hamlet of Saline). The molding of the facade is in Nanto stone. On the back there is a small church dedicated to San Giovanni Evangelista.
  • Villa San Florian (in the hamlet of Caselle). The door and window frames are made of Nanto stone. Opposite there is an oratory dedicated to San Floriano.
  • Very Modern Theater. Inaugurated in September 1876 with the name of Teatro della Concordia, it was later called Teatro Sociale. Rebuilt with the addition of the coffee shop and a wing for the dressing rooms, it was reopened in December 1910. The room took on its current name in 1919 when it was transformed into a cinema. It became the property of the Municipality in 1936. The restoration works carried out between 1982 and 1985 brought the building back to its original image, both internally and externally. Since 1986 the Theater has been the seat of important cultural events.
  • 3 Cathedral of SS. Vito, Modesto and Crescenzia, Via Giacomo Matteotti. It has very ancient origins, dating back to before the year 1000. Inside there are paintings by famous painters such as: Giambattista Tiepolo, Francesco Maffei, Niccolò Bambini, Antonio Zanchi, Giulio Carpioni and Domenico Campagnola.
