The small town Olbernhau lies in the Flöhatal, which forms a large basin here, and not far from the border with the Czech Republic. Despite its ridge location, Olbernhau is the lowest point along the German-Czech border in the Ore Mountains, with an average height of 445 m. Olbernhau is traditionally a town of blacksmithing and is organized in the ring of European blacksmithing cities.

The Flöhatalbahn, which runs from Flea to Olbernhau, was put back into operation on January 29, 2005 after a long interruption. Today regional trains from Chemnitz run every hour on the route.

In the street

Of Freiberg (and thus from Dresden) you use the B 101 to behind Großhartmannsdorf and then drive via Pfaffroda to the B 171, which leads into the city. Of Chemnitz from it goes on the B 174 via Zschopau (very generous local bypass) Marienberg and there on the B 171 via Zöblitz. The B 171 is part of the "Saxon Silver Road" on this section.

  • Zöblitz (9 km to the west, B 171 "Sächsische Silberstraße") - small town on the eastern side of the Black Pockau Valley; Serpentine Stone Museum.
  • Seiffen (12 km east) - the small climatic health resort stands for its wooden toys and the typical Erzgebirge Christmas decorations.
  • Neuhausen (13 km east) - the oldest and largest nutcracker museum in Europe with around 4400 copies.
  • Pobershau (13 km to the west, via Zöblitz) - located in the valley of the Roten Pockau; Show mine "Tiefer Molchner Stolln".
  • Rübenau (13 km south, B 171 over jump, there left) - holiday resort with numerous leisure activities. As an alternative to driving via jump-off, Rübenau can also be reached via the southern route along the Czech border.
  • Deutschneudorf (14 km southeast) - to Deutschneudorf you drive directly along the Czech border. Even if that Amber room is not found here, you can still visit the “Fortuna-Stollen” visitor mine.
  • German hermit (16 km southeast, via Seiffen) - at Deutscheinsiedel you can get to the Czech Republic via a road border crossing that was only opened in 2002.
