Geographical notes
The town is located in the Val Tagliamento, in the Alpine region of Carnia. It is the first town you meet (following the course of the river) on the right bank of the Tagliamento.
Background
The findings of human bones and weapons lend strength to the thesis that Preone stands on what may have been a place of observation.
The municipal body was suppressed in 1928 to be aggregated to the municipality of Enemonzo, it was then reconstituted as an autonomous municipality in 1946.

By car
- A4 motorwayUdine – Tarvisio; take the exit Carnia and continue in the direction Tolmezzo. Then follow the directions for Villa Santina - Ampezzo - Mauria Pass. After passing the town of Enemonzo, after about 2 km, turn left (Preone sign) and take the Provincial road n. 12. After about 1 km from the crossroads, past the bridge over the Tagliamento river, you reach the town of Preone.
- from the Mauria Pass: follow the directions for Tolmezzo. After passing the town of Socchieve, turn right (Preone sign) and take the Provincial road n. 12. After about 1 km from the crossroads, after crossing the bridge over the Tagliamento river, you reach the town of Preone.
- From the Val d'Arzino: along the Provincial Road 12, at the crossroads with the indication Valle di Preone, near the town of Pozzis, turn onto the Strada Comunale Preone - Pozzis. After about 3 km you will reach the stavoli of the Preone Valley. Continue to the town of Preone (about 8 km).
- N.B. The road is not passable by buses and is closed to transit in the winter season.

What see
- 1 Paleontological Museum and nature trail. The naturalistic exhibition "Preone 200 million years ago" is housed in the eighteenth-century Palazzo Lupieri built by the noble family of Venetian origins in the Carnic style. The museum exhibition is integrated with the Lunas self-guided nature trail and an educational laboratory. It is part of the museum system of Carnia.
- Paleontological area of the Seazza stream. Area of very important fossil finds (shrimp, fish, plants, small reptiles), including one of the oldest Pterosaurs ever found (the Preondactylus).
- Parish Church of San Giorgio Martire.
- Arzino torrent waterfalls.
- Military fortifications. Several military posts in the Vallo Alpino. Opera 1 barrage no. 50 of the Vallo Alpino del Littorio was located in the confluence of the Tagliamento river and the Lumiei stream in the 1940s, to control the penetration of potential invaders.
- Val di Preone. Uninhabited valley located in the immediate vicinity of the town, characterized by an immense green expanse which, especially in summer, attracts a fair amount of tourists from all over Italy.

- 1 Playground Bar - Preone Tourism Center, Via delle Scuole, 6, ☎ 39 339 1397697. The kiosk of the municipal playground is located in the heart of the small town of Preone, next to the town hall. Open in the summer months, from June to September, it organizes entertainment evenings, sporting and cultural events, live music and tasting of typical dishes. The bar is part of the multifunctional structure equipped with a playground, soccer field, bowling green and skating rink, all with night lighting.
